Active Ashford

Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

Welcome to the Active Ashford Community Sports Partnership website.

The Active Ashford partnership is supported by some of the biggest sporting names in the County who have some form of link with the area such as one of Britain's top athletes, runner Lisa Dobriskey Olympic Gold Medal Winner cyclist Jamie Staff.  Each ambassador has their own web page and on that can be seen an Exclusive interview.

Other pages on the site look at County and National Performers who have links to the Borough as well as ways of obtaining funding.

One of the major impacts of Active Ashford is to get more people participating in physical exercise, a directory of places to do this can be found as well as to clubs that have achieved the Quality Standard Accreditation eg Clubmark.

Active Programmes(May 2009 - September 2009)

In May 2009, the Active Swim and Active Together programmes were launched aimed at introducing and delivering activities to under represented groups such as disabled people, those with physical and learning disabilities, people from low income families and adolescents.

The Active Swim scheme which consists of offers such as entrance fees, car parking refunds, lessons for all ages, leisure swims and the crèche at both the Stour Centre and Tenterden Leisure Centre the uptake has seen many people from those target groups taking up this fantastic opportunity.

Further groups and individuals who are referred to the scheme will be phased in over the next year such as GP referrals and particular primary schools.

The Active Together scheme as with the Active Swim offers those under represented groups to take part in a variety of sports and activities held at leisure facilities within the Borough (Julie Rose Stadium, Stour Centre, Tenterden Leisure Centre, Courtside/Pitchside and the Ashford skate park), the taster sessions in dance, boccia, basketball, athletics, netball, tennis, football, table tennis, table top cricket, parachute games, archery, new age curling, bmx bikes and skateboards.

Jonathan a participant at the Julie Rose stadium day said: “Very enjoyable it was nice to look around the stadium and the staff were excellent and very much enjoyed the whole day” and Steve said: “Very good especially the coaches that taught us all, they were excellent”.

Managers of those clients said:

“It’s been a great opportunity to introduce people to these activities and help with their confidence.  “Dave Rawling – Ashford Learning Disability Community Interest Company

“A Brilliant morning it was lovely to see everyone enjoy sport.  I would love to see more people attend and use facilities and promote sport in general.” Linda Priest – Carer

Thanks to the Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust (EKPCT) for the funding and the leisure providers Ashford Leisure Trust, Serco, Ashford Borough Council and the coaches for assisting with the Active schemes during the summer of 2009.
