Active Together

A new scheme was developed in May 2009 thanks to funding form Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust which allowed a coordinator to work with hard to reach groups.

In the summer of 2009 a handful of taster days were run at various facilities such as the Stour Centre, Julie Rose Stadium, Courtside and Tenterden Leisure Centre.  The days were attended by groups and individuals with some form of disability.  They took part in a range of activities such as archery, athletics, basketball, boccia, dance, swimming, new age curling, football, tennis, table top cricket and aerobics.

Over 100 people took part in the sessions and had a great time with the majority rating their experience as excellent.

“Brilliant morning lovely to see everyone enjoy sport. I would love to see more people attend and use facilities and promote sport in general.” - Linda Priest

It was a pleasure to see everyone enjoying themselves and gaining empowerment to do new sports. I had parents phoning to say thank you their son/daughter had really enjoyed the day, says it all. Well done to all the staff for making the event a great day.

Early in 2010, the coordinator began working closely and delivering sessions of various activities to Sure Start Children's Centres in South Ashford.  The sessions give opportunities for the clients eg toddlers (pre school age) and parents and guardians to get an introduction into physical activity and different sports.

Mike Grant coordinator of the programme said: "the scheme gives opportunities for families to take part together in activities which they may not do in their own environment."
