History
Candy is a member of Ashford Athletics Club and the GB
Athletics team.
She has competed for GB deaf team since early 1995. In
2005 she broke the British deaf UK record in the 100m hurdles
and 2K steeplechase.
In Switzerland, Lausanne in 1995, At the World Games for the
Deaf in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1997,she won gold medals in both the
800m and 1500m (the only British female medallist.) In
January 2005, at the 20th Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia she
won double bronze medals in the 800m and 1500m.
In April 2009, Candy competed in the 5000m at the
Deaflympics trial in Stoke-on-Trent Open meeting where she won
a gold medal in a time of 20 mins and 01 secs for the 1st
time in new event. She achieved the qualifying time for the
5000m going to the Deaflympics this year in Taipei in September
2009 and is hoping to do the 1500m.
In September, Candy competed but unfortunately had to pull
out of the 1500m at the last minute in the stadium due to
illness. However, she competed in the 5000m and
finished in 4th place with a new personal best in 19:15.70, a
massive PB knocking 19 mins off her best.
On Wed 24th June, at the 3K Kent Champs Candy
won a bronze medal.
What is your greatest achievement?
It was winning the gold in the 800m and 1500m in the DeafGames
in 1997 in Denmark.
What are your future ambitions?
To compete at the Deaflympics in TaiPei in 2009, and to
continue to run for Ashford.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy going to the cinema with my husband, and shopping for
clothes!
What has sport given you?
Sport has allowed me to travel the world and be respected by
people who might not have even known about me as a deaf
person.
