Active Ashford
Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle
Welcome to the Active Ashford Sports
Partnership website. This site will supply information
on the partnership, who is actually involved and hear about the
latest news and events that are on and around the
Borough.
The partnership is supported by some of the biggest sporting
names in the County who have some form of link with the area such
as one of Britain's top athletes, runner Lisa Dobriskey and Kent
and England future cricket star James Tredwell.
The purpose of Active Ashford is to bring together local
organisations to encourage participation in sport and physical
activity by forming a partnership network that will benefit the
whole community.
Active Ashford was set up and began early 2008 to look at
existing and new initiatives and schemes to get people
healthier and more active.
Serap Osman a Health Promotion Practitioner
Specialist for Physical Activity with the Eastern and Coastal
Kent PCT says; "Being active will benefit your physical health, as
well as your emotional and social wellbeing. By being active on a
regular basis you will reduce the risk of developing illnesses such
as CHD, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and depression. Physical
activity will also improve your stamina, energy levels, mood and
mental functioning, as well as aiding restful sleep and helping you
to maintain a healthy weight".
Recommendation
An active lifestyle is beneficial for promoting good health and
is also a great opportunity for socialising. But activity can be as
social or as personal as you choose. Current recommendations
suggest that:
- Adults should be
participating in a minimum of 30 minutes a
day of moderate intensity physical activity.
- Children should be
participating in a minimum of 1 hour per
day of moderate intensity physical activity.
This can be achieved in small bouts throughout the day, such as
3 sessions of 10 minutes for adults, making it easier to fit into
your everyday life. Any activity that makes you breathe
slightly deeper and harder, and feel slightly warmer is 'moderate
intensity physical activity'.
This could be:
- Digging and gardening work
- Walking to work or school
- Stair climbing
- Playing badminton
- Kicking the ball around in the street
It can be any physical activity you like!
